Neither snow nor rain nor quarantine can prevent the journey to Weber’s Bakery and its assortment of baked goods in Chicago.
The establishment is located on the southwest side of the city, a mere 13-minute drive west from Midway International Airport. Since 1930, the bakery started by a German immigrant offers a selection of delicacies, none more spectacular than their made-to-order chocolate cake.
Once the thread holding the box together is cut and the piece is unveiled, the presentation speaks to its flavor.
The exterior reminds me of the Sagrada Família basilica in Spain: a uniform color with intricate designs arranged from top to bottom. In the case of the unfinished church, it tells the life story of Jesus Christ. With Weber’s cake, it presents the piping of chocolate whipped cream looping and spiraling around the base with edible wafer flowers sitting on top.
But even with differing appearances, you could say that both the church and the cake can be described as divine.
Once cut, the cake breaks its uniform and reveals color. In this recommended order, chocolate cake with glazed scarlet strawberries and creamy white cannoli filling is lodged in layers behind the airy whipped cream facade.
The chocolate cake is not too sweet, with only a hint of cocoa that does not outshine the flavors of the other components. Eaten together, the chocolate cake and cannoli combination is not too crumbly and has a satisfying kick.
Follow it up with a scoop of firm strawberries and the fresh taste will make you wish your birthday came sooner.
Because of the dessert's softness, it may be hard to grab a plentiful size of chocolate cake with one slice. The pitfall is that once the cake, cannoli, and strawberries are eaten, there is still a heap of chocolate whipped cream leftover on the plate.
To make light of the situation, it becomes an excuse to get up and retrieve another slice, just to make sure every bite has that consistent Weber flavor.
